Why Zombies?

Movie zombies are way cool right now ...
I overheard someone saying to another, "I wonder why zombie stories are so popular?"

Here's what I think.
We're witnessing a lot of layoffs and businesses going bust or restructuring or downsizing and other practices which pink slip workers - all of which kill the souls of people ... it seems appropriate - zombie movies and people walking around, out of work, zombie-like.

Zombies and vampires are both witnessing a rebirth. Fantasy helps take one's mind off the ordinary (and often depressing) real life.

I like your theory. Plausible. Mine was that people just like to see other, fellow ordinary people kill something without guilt. People killing other people makes you feel bad...takes the pure rush out of it for an ordinary person. People killing soulless zombies is justifiable. They have no feelings. Sick and twisted. I don't watch that stuff. I can't stomach it.

The tv shows this Fall are supposedly darker, less optimistic because of the recession.

This fixation (to use nice words) that middle age women are having for a teenage vampire is... sick?

What's your go on that one?
